Raising Forest Domain Level

Hi
We currently have 3 x Domain controllers , 2 running  Server 2008 R2 data center and on running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, all have a Forest Level and a Domain Functional Level of 2003 server

I am now looking to raise both the Forest and Domain Functional Level to 2008 R2 for all DC'S

Can someone tell me if I need to , raise both on DC1 , then DC2 , then DC3 individually?

Do I raise the Forest level , then the Domain functional server on DC1, Then DC2 etc?

Do they all need a reboot as soon as they are raised?

We don't use Exchnage or Lync, so from what I have read it is relatively straight forward?

How long does it take per DC approx. to do raise the levels?

Thanks!

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You only need to raise the Forest Functional Level and Domain Function Level one time. The Domain Functional Level should be raised first, than the forst functional level second.

Forest Fucntional level should be raised on the DC that is holding the Schame Master Role. The Domain Functional Level should be raised on the DC holding the Infrastructure Master role. In most environments the roles are usually on the same DC so you would perform all fo the steps on this DC.

If the roles are separate then perform them on the corresponding DC's that hold the appropriate roles.

See above comment. Domain First.

They do not need to be rebooted.

*note: WAIT FOR ALL DC's to REPLICATE THE DOMAIN FUNCTIONAL 2008R2 LEVEL BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE FOREST FUNCTIONAL LEVEL 2008R2.

Once replication has successfully completed raise the forest functional level.

You should be fine.

This change happend immediately and will replicate to your other DC's that are in the same AD site (intra-site replication). If you have multiple sites (inter-site replication) it can take a minimum of 15 minutes to replicate these changes.

These changes are non-reversable. so make sure that you take a system state backup of your DC's before proceeding.
