Windows 8.1 and UHD (4k) display: after display goes to sleep, windows position and size are reset to 1024x768

Since switching to an UHD display, I am experiencing this very annoying issue, that after locking my workstation and then returning to work, all windows positions are reset to upper left corner and a resolution of ~ 1024x768.
I am using [WindowsKey]+[Left] or [Right] most of the time, to use the left or right half of the screen, but some windows (like explorer, new e-mail, etc.) should keep the size they had.
Could it be an issue with how the display is driven (DisplayPort 1.2, 60 hz)?
The only reference I found about this issue is here, but none of the provided solutions did solve my problem.

is the monitor natively display port? does your video card have a display port output? if not are you using an active display port adapter?
oaksboardAuthor Commented:
Hello David,

everything is native, no adapter needed. DisplayPort cable was provided with the monitor and is 1.2 compliant.

NB: some windows are moved/resized to the upper right corner (with an even smaller size) and some others, like today my open e-mails, are completely off screen..

Just taking a chance on the manual.  The copy I used is attached.

If you go to OSD (the OK button, or Multiview button on front of monitor) is PiP/PbP mode turned off?

Do you have Smart Control Premium software for your monitor installed?  Has set up wizard.  Also select
SmartDesktop from Options to see how partitions are set.  See if set up as one single partition for whole display.  Discussed on pages 22-26.

Might try to read the few pages of troubleshooting steps at the end of the manual starting at page 43 to the end.

page 44 mentions if you go to Device Mgr and see "Plug and Play Monitor" under Monitor, then you need to remove SmartControl Premium software and reinstall.

Of course, the Phillips support contacts are on pages 39-42.

Later, we could always look at the registry keys concerning this but I've found no "real" resolution that is reported, although some with your described problem have succeeded with fixes by changing their key values.  I wonder if you have multiple keys in your registry due to a long history of different monitors.  Some have trouble getting them sorted out and old keys for monitors no longer in use needed to be deleted for them to work.

Also wanted to say, most 4K products out these days need a firmware update as soon as you get them out of the box.  I didn't notice any mention of that in the manual somehow.

Hello Christopher, thank you for your replies. Checking if there was a firmware update available was one of the first things I did.. But there seem to be none available.
I never read a display manual (I think few of us have ever done so ;) because there really should be no need for it.. but I will this time and report back if anything should fix my issue.
To answer your questions: PiP/PbP mode is turned off and Premium software is not installed.
Christopher Jay WolffWiggle My Legs, OwnerCommented:
Yes I can relate on the manual thing.   :)

What I read briefly about audio settings done through OSD is that it will always revert to those saved OSD settings, so wondered what they implemented in OSD for resolution and partitioning.  Hope you can find something besides the dreaded registry key fixes others are attempting for this type of problem.

Good luck.

No such setting in the OSD, there is only a "resolution warning", if settings are not optimal, but no partitioning. I think this is a software feature. SmartControl Premium Software is installed, but I did not have time to test it yet. Will report back as soon as i do.
oaksboardAuthor Commented:
Reporting back after using SmartControl Software for a bit. Partitioning has no effect on the reported problem. Windows are still resized/moved to the corner.
But the software helps in getting windows repositioned faster. I'm now using a combination of partitioning the display in four pieces and win+left, win+right and win+up key combinations to be able to restore a useful desktop arrangement faster.
So thank you for letting me know about this SmartControl Software, which I wouldn't have installed otherwise.

Hello there,

I did apply the registry settings as mentioned in the forum for all entries with NOIED and SIMULATED in the name.
Result is similar to the one mentioned in the post: windows are still moved a bit to the left, but at least seem not to resize anymore.
Combine that with the advantages of the SmartControl software to split the screen in four parts to quickly align smaller windows (explorer, etc.) and I can consider myself happy.
