WSUS question

Hi Experts,

in WSUS some updates are for x64 installations and some are for x86 installations.
When I have an update just for x64 installations then I know and approve it just for this folder where I have just x64 installations.

But what about the other updates ?
Lets say I have WIN7 updates , nothing written about x64, do I have to install this update on all WIN7 machines, x86 and x64 ?
Or these updates just for x86 ?

If it doesn't say which version, it is usually for both x86 and x64.

are you sure ?

It shouldnt matter, WSUS clients will only install updates that apply to them. Updates are *NOT* pushed to clients, they are pulled by the clients. Easiest way to determine which updates to approve is to sort them by "Needed".

A client will not install an incompatible or unnecessary patch, if that is what you are concerned about. For example, even if you apply all patches to all systems, a 32-bit machine won't install a 64-bit patch, or a .NET 4.0 patch will only be installed by machines with .NET 4.0.

I'll see if I can find an MS article that talks about combined patches.

There can also be cases when the number of bits doesn't matter because the files being fixed are not system-related, such as XML or other config files.

As BrianB said, it is safe to push updates to non matching platforms.

WSUS DOES ABSOLUTELY NO PUSHING, it is a pull technology! Clients only pull updates that pertain to themselves. A 32 bit client wont even look at 64 bit updates and vice versa.

Well it is an automated pull.

But most people call it pushing the updates.

ok, because I have created some extra folders in WSUS.
Specially for WIN7 and WIN2008 I have created seperate folders for x64 and x86.
With your opinion it is not needed right ?

What about Office ?
We still have 4 different versions of Office in the network.
Can I also approve all updates to all clients ?

Yes, unnecessary...same goes for office.
