"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

BeyondTrust offers a free vulnerability scanner (Retina) which I believe is good for up to 256 IP's. It's not going to detect viruses though but it will help you to achieve a secure configuration.

It takes a fair (i.e. high) level of access which generally works best if the scanner is on the computer(s) itself.
One approach to reach your overall objective would be this:
- have antivirus software on each computer that will automatically update itself and automatically scan and automatically remove threats.  How *great* a product you use may or may not matter much.  We use Bitdefender because it's relatively unobtrusive and gets high detection marks and we use Microsoft Security Essentials (or Defender) on other machines.  I don't see much difference in outcome with relatively "mature" users.
- we also use Malwarebytes on the same machines as a backup/cleanup mechanism.  I like the paid version because it works without needing the user to be knowledgeable or proactively involved.
- use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and/or Retina to assess the state of the computers.  This is important because if the operating systems aren't up-to-date then that fights your overall objective - antivirus and antimalware tools aside.  Users (in general) can't be trusted to keep the updates running automatically and can't be trusted to install updates by manual interaction.  There will always be that "10% that don't get the word".
