Upgrading OS with SQL 2012

I have a copy of SQL 2012 running on Windows server 2008 R2 Standard.

i need to add more ram to the server, so to get rid of the 32gb limit i need to upgrade the OS to 2012 r2.

Can i do an in place upgrade without mauling my SQL Server? or should i set up a brand new server and just migrate the data across?

Ideally in place would be a lot easier.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes, you can upgrade the Windows server without affecting the SQL Server. Just see it as you are applying a service pack on the operating system. Of course SQL Server will be unavailable during the OS upgrade but after that everything should run ok. Anyway as a best practice you should backup all databases before proceed with the OS upgrade.

if you are able to purchase a 2008 r2 enterprise key, you can just change the edition from there without an OS upgrade
