USMail: technology involved when you send check for monthly utilities...

do humans open all the 1000s of incoming mails to say big names like VERIZON or electric bills. is any technology used to help the staff or are staff being replaced (in smaller or bigger measures) by technology in any way in this kind of routine processing (specifically when personal or business checks are being sent by US Post)?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There is no technology which will 100% detect checks inside an envelope, so all possible check envelopes have to be opened. A machine could open the envelope and possibley dump the contents out but a human would check for checks.
Some departments might discard envelopes if the possibility of containing a check was 0.
Some companies (as I just found out) which ask for returns provided an envelope into which you had to insert the contents in a special way so that a number in the contents would show through a window. Thus the number could be checked without opening the envelope.
