Free messenger IM between employees

Does anyone know a free good reliable messenger that will work between employees.

Just like Lync, but free.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Openfire: http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/

I have it installed on a Linux VM and use Jitsi (https://jitsi.org/) as clients, for video chat.

Do I need to install the "server" or just clients?

You need the server. The clients all connect to the server.

For the server, you need an always on machine (a VM with 1 GB RAM and 5GB of space is enough).

I have only two computers, I am looking for a free service to just register and go.

You can use Skype, Y! Messenger etc. All free, all just register and go.

OpenFire is an option if you want to control the communication (meaning everything is stored by you).

We use Slack (https://slack.com/) for instant message which has a free plan. There is no server to install, it allows some customization, and has both desktop and mobile clients.
