there are plenty of programming languages, which one to learn? what is visual studio and why it is so expensive

Hello,

i have interest to learn programmign languages.  i do not know from where to start. i have very basic knowledge of Excel VBA that i learned from the excel forums.

any idea how the programming languages are inter-linked with each other?   which programmign language is most widely used and is good for career.

what is MS Visual Studio Premium  and what can be done with this software and why is it so expensive?   what programming languages do i need to learn in order to be able to use Visual Studio Premium?

any help is appreciated.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Start with this: http://www.codecademy.com/en/tracks/code-year

It's free, you learn the basics of HTML, CSS, JS and Python.

If, after this, you still want to be a programmer, you'll know the basics and can learn any language you want.
