Awesome. I created an A record on my internal DNS that is now allowing communication internally via ping.<br />

The App is still not working so am going to create a public dns name with my ISP and see if that helps. <br />

Alrighty, all set! Internal DNS entry (smtp.domain.com) as well as a Public DNS entry with smtp.domain.com pointing to my Public IP.<br />

Did the trick! Didn't even need to alter Exchange in any way which is even better. Thanks for the advice.

Is it a situation where I need a public DNS called smtp.domain.com or is this something I need to do in Exchange?

Exchange is the server side of a collaborative application product that is part of the Microsoft Server infrastructure. Exchange's major features include email, calendaring, contacts and tasks, support for mobile and web-based access to information, and support for data storage.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical, globally distributed system responsible for associating the name of a computer, service or other resource into an IP address for connecting to the Internet or a private network. Most prominently, it translates domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of computer services and devices worldwide.

Interactions between email servers and clients are governed by email protocols. The three most common email protocols are POP, IMAP and MAPI. Most email software operates under one of these (and many products support more than one).  The correct protocol must be selected, and correctly configured, if you want your email account to work.
