Using SNMP traps for backup monitoring on various systems

Hi

I am using Acronis and Symantec backup software on various systems and Asigra for cloud backup. It looks like both of them support SNMP traps so I was wondering if there is a way to use that for backup monitoring from various systems over the internet. I am relying at the moment on email notifications but those do not work 100% all the time and sometimes get caught by Antispam services.

Thank you
Tom

Hi,

I would recomand Nagios. It's free, it's open source and it's reliable. Also there are some applications on iOS and Android for intergoating Nagios and notify you in case of failure. I am using aNag (free) in Android.

Best regards!

Do you have a  VPS that you have configured with an snmptrapd application?
You would then set it up as the trap destination for public community.
You can have the events upon receipt reflect the status, nagios, sabbix and similar monitoring applications are likely what you are looking for.
Setup a mail server on the VPS to which the emails will be directed as to not be susceptible to the anti-spam ........

No, I don't have VPS. Are you able to provide me some sort of guide or the instructions to set it all up from the scratch?

What do you have access to old workstation/servers onto which you can install Linux distro centos, etc.? What options are you looking for?
Look at nagios as the monitoring service. Do you want email or sms notification when an expected backup event does not complete?

I.e. The only mailing you could configure getting is when a backup is not performed.

I do not have any old workstations at the moment.

I would expect an email but preferably something which will allow me to generate a report of how the backup was running for the month.
I'm the kind of person that I need to get the confirmation of the successful backup too.

what resources do you have that can be used to deal with what you want?
a remedy to having anti-spam catching your email notifications is to white list the sender of those notifications..
