Laptop Wont Turn On
Hey guys,
I have an HP ENVY TS m7-j020dx laptop computer, wont turn on at all. No power coming on at all. The only light on the laptop that comes on is the light where I put the power plug, its a little white light. Any thoughts? The laptop is out of warranty as of November 2014. I was thinking either the board or the CPU, but wanted opinions before I start ordering parts.
Thanks in Advance

Try another AC power adapter (your AC power adapter may be bad)
If no change then you have a bad power circuit on the motherboard (I have two laptops with the same failure... Sony & Toshiba )
There was also extensive use of a bad production run of capacitors which caused motherboards to fail, some makers issued recalls but the caps usually didn't fail until the warranty expired... (somewhat convenient for the maker...doh)
Unfortunately makers service / replacement of a laptops motherboard is going to cost more than a new laptop.
Consider buying a new laptop.
You can remove the hard drive from the present laptop to recover your data.

Power plug is the only functional indicator the asker reported.
most probably not the AC adapter as it shows the own indicator light. But ive seen sullies whose light was lit and the power still wasnt ok for the laptop and the laptop didnt started/reacted.
So if possible without spending money its worth to try another one. Or at least check output voltage under current.

here my laptop troubleshooting guide, i hope it helps you :
- remove all external devices
-you can disable devices from BIOS to test (sound, lan, etc..)
- if no display - test with an external monitor
- test if it runs from battery alone, or from AC alone
- test also with a known good battery !
***some laptops have a reset button - if you have one use it!
- remove battery and AC adaptor, hold power button for 20 sec, connect AC and reboot --> any display ? if NO -->
- disconnect all disk and cd drives, battery , and other cards and peripherals, leave only 1 ram stick
- boot -->any display ?
-if you can access the bios battery, remove the battery, AC, and bios battery for a minute to reset the bios
or test it, it should read 3 V
*** you can test the disk on another pc, if you like !
===>>you can test if the mobo works outside the casing, connected to power and external video !
you can also remove and reseat the video plug - it sometimes comes loose

Is your battery dead? I have a Dell laptop that won't turn on at all unless the battery has at least some juice in it.

Hi Guys,
I have tried all the above suggestions, no power at all. Just the little white light near the power socket when Plugged in. Just another note, the light is Amber when the battery is connected, but white when it is not connected. I assume this indicates the battery Is charging?

Yes. when white, and ou hit power nothing happens at all?
One option given the warranty expired is to check with what the cost will be for them to diagnose the issue, and provide you with the cost of repair. Then you can decide whether to repair the system yourself or have them do it at the price/cost they outline.
The data on the HD might be accessible after it is pulled and connected to another system.

Hey Guys,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I was on vacation. I sent the laptop back to HP for motherboard replacement. My client paid $800 for it a year and a half ago so the $300 HP is charging is worth it to my client. Thanks for your input.

tx for the feedback, Jazzanlex
When was the last time it turned on?
Anything spilled on?
Troubleshooting, the power on, switch is likely simpler, than getting a new MB.
