Outlook 2013 - Messages get marked unread after reply (only when clicking the alert to open a message)

I am experiencing a mildly infuriating issue with Outlook 2013. When I receive an email, if I click the alert box that pops up to open the email and reply to it from that window, the message gets marked unread when I actually send the reply. It is driving me crazy.

I think it has to do with the "Mark Unread" button. When I click the alert box, that button is already "on". I don't know why that would be.

Can you check from another PC or machine. If you see same issue. If not, reinstall Office or outlook again.

I don't have Outlook 2013 on any other PCs currently. But I do have 2010 on another and I tested there and it does not have that problem.

Is a reinstall the only fix?

Did you tried re-indexing the system? Also make sure that Outlook is included in the Indexing search option.

Uninstall and reinstall fixed it.
And just like that, it's already happening again. Would Microsoft Lync (Skype for Business) have anything to do with this? I'm doing the Windows updates now after re-installing Lync (I had to uninstall it to get Office to reinstall).
You have some other tool or software, like handheld device with Active Sync. You might need to look, where all you configured the profile.
