Macbook pro 15" (discrete graphics) late 2013 on OS X 10.10.3 keeps returning to login screen

Can log into safe boot without issue. Created a new admin account through safe boot but upon first full login into the new account the same behaviour as in the title showed up instantly.

Have tried Apple diagnostics boot which revealed no hardware issues. Have tried deleting contents of /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences (for new account) but this does not seem to resolve the issue.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A possible solution to your problem may be found with what I experienced on my macbook.  My problem did not start happening until I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite.  Check out the Accepted Solution to see if that helps?

Thanks. But nothing helped other than re-installing Yosemite, which by the way is the most painless way to recover your Mac as it literally only takes 5 minutes of your time or less to setup and then it proceeds completely unattended and finishes in an hour as long as you have a decent (fibre) broadband connection!

The user profiles, files and apps remain unaffected! I unnecessarily wasted an entire evening trying all solutions other than reinstalling.
