Nas drives configuration

I plan on setting up a ZFS server using FreeNas, the drives are currently connected to a PERC 6/i Raid controller. I noticed that creating the vdev on the PERC controller only sets up the RAID but FreeNas sees it as a single drive.

So my question is do I need to setup 6 single drive vdevs on the PERC controller so then in FreeNAS I can have it do its software RAIDZ2 (ZFS) configuration? Or better yet what is the best drive configuration in regards to setting up FreeNas with 6 drives that are already connected to a hardware RAID controller?

you have ZFS and you want to use a hardware RAID controller?  Wrong, wrong, wrong.   Get yourself a plain-vanilla non-RAID LSI SAS/SATA controller on ebay for $50 or so.  Look at the LSI 38xx family.   (I can't tell you physically what will mount, so you'll have to research dimensions and connectors).   But the 6i is 3Gbit SAS/SATA, so you have lots of options.

It's not so much that "I want" that is how the server is configured, now learning that ZFS is a software RAID I see whats going on. So yea I either go RAID 6 on the PERC controller or RAID Z2 with a standard SAS/SATA controller. Thank you I was thinking that I could use the PERC as a standard NON-RAID setup but it only allows RAID period. Seeing as how the server is setup I think I will just go with RAID6 on the PERC controller and not break the server apart to wire individual wires (2U rackmount server with PCB plate for the SAS/SATA connections).

It's at the first stages of setup so I don't "have" a ZFS server but was planning on configuring one.

Thank you.
