be aware if you connect multiple devices to the same usb port (over a hub) you split the usb bandwith

As of 2012, when a purchased my laptop how would a fast dual core i3 processor compare to a low power Core i5-3317U.
just check them out on the cpu benchmardk posted above!

on checking the cpu benchmark, this is an average processor. Not even close to the best intel core i3.
So what did i get by paying for a i5 and getting an average i3 in return

Generally i3's are lower end CPU's than i5's. Also the built-in GPU of i3's and i5's are normally lower-end, and a good GPU is usually one of the important factors for gaming. So if a certain PC is available with both, i3 and i5 CPU's, you'd want the i5 version if you need more power. But of course this does not need to be true if you compare an "old" i5 with a "new" i3, but as usually the old and new CPU's need other mainboards with different sockets, you can't change between old and new on the same PC, so the comparison doesn't make too much sense.
