How do I check for empty tag in XML variable in SQL ?

I have an XML variable that I pass in the stored procedure. Within this variable there are are many elements that subdivide all the data.

What is the SQL terminology to say:

 if this element <routingTemplates /> in this XML SQL variable @paramXmlData is empty  don't do anything

Hi pmauriello,

If you have a structure like:

There are 2 levels you have to check,

If Item = null
If Itemnumber = null

This because, if Item = null, there is no Itemnumber or Description to check.
