"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Do you have important data on this drive? Seems that the logical board on HDD failed. To check this you need to open the enclosure and connect the drive directly to a PC.
If there is no data you need and the drive is on warranty - then replace it simply.

I had the same problems with another My Book Essential external for a client of mine--apparently an issue on Windows 7. I returned it and think we got the passport line (or I may even switched to a Seagate instead). Regardless I called WD (http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en) and they suggested I return it and get another, said it was a bad drive.

Is this a new unit (first use attempt)?  ... If so, probably defective and should be returned for replacement...

Is this an older unit (with data)? ... If so, need to contact manufacturer for warranty repair!

had tried with different cables, and connected to different usb ports the same thing. use the wd diagnostics software to run and the results show the fast and extended tests results ok.

The software scan is communictaing with usb controller. To make a proper scan you need to connect the hdd which is inside this box to the sata interface. Only then can you say if it is healthy or not.

there is some old data on the drive which would like to actually erase all data safely before getting a one to one exchange. if try to take out the hard disk, the warranty will be void if damage the casing catch.
the wd diagnosis writing all zeros to the hard drive will be good enough to wipe off any data on the drive?

If, you open th box then yes, the warranty is void.
Writng zeros is the same as wiping. So if the drive allows it then do it.
Otherwise open a ticket with WD and ask them how to wipe it and if opening the box to wipe data is ok.
