Export Import mailbox to PST

I was just curious to see if anyone knows if there is a limit to the number or mailboxes that can be exported or import at one time to a pst from Exchange 2010 SP3. If exporting 200 mailboxes would anything interrupt this export if one failed for any reason.

I do not beleive that there is a hard limit, however I would generally do these in batches as it does put extra load on the Exchange server which requires more resources. Doing this outside of production hours would also be a good idea.

You can export as many mailbox you need. By default 4 export session with be running which you can increase it, by modifying config file on your CAS server.

Also note, bad item can impact mailbox export. Set it to 50, which is max you can set from GUI. If you still want to set it higher, you can use powershell command with acceptdataloss switch.

Also take full backup before before exporting mailbox to pst file.

I have about 900 1GB or less of archive mailboxes that I will need to exported to pst and then imported to primary mailbox. Do you think this will achievable over a weekend. This will all be done locally

One week won't be sufficient to complete it. You need to take two way approach, first export the data for all users and disable the archive. Then perform the import. This way  you can make sure, users are not moving data in Archive mailbox and you can avoid any rework. Secondly, you can continue with the import during week days also.

It really does not depend on the size of the mailbox more about how many items it has to move. The mailbox could be very small with thousands of emails which could take just as long with a mailbox with a few items that have larger attachments.

This is the same concept for moving files in Windows. The more individual files you have the longer it will take.

That being said it will take longer than a weekend to complete this. The good news is that you can perfom an online mailbox move while the user is still connected. In Exchange 2007 you could not do this as it used the move-mailbox cmdlet which connects directly to your mailbox.

Exchange 2010 and 2013 use MRS service to move the mailbox which does not affect the user when the move processes has started.

So doing this in smaller batches during the day should be fine. You need to check your resources so that you can pick the right number to transfer without affect the Exchange Server performance.

Hi Will,

I don't think he is asking to move mailbox. He is looking to export and import PST from archive mailbox to primary mailbox.
