Can plugging in a POE device into a POE+ port damage it?

For example, if I plug a POE security camera into a POE+ can it damage it?
The POE+/POE switch was purchased within the last year.

Thank you,

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I should not think so. Power over Ethernet is "reasonably" standard. Unless the POE+ device was defective, it should not damage a camera. Ethernet ports are usually protected against inbound and outbound damage.

I agree with John,

The main difference between the 802.3af (PoE) and 802.3at (PoE+) standards is the maximum amount of power they provide over the Cat5 cabling.

The maximum amount of power for the 802.3af (PoE) standard is 15.4 watts.

The maximum for the 802.3at (PoE+) standard is 25.5 watts

The switch h should be backwords compatible and work properly.  You might want to check the specs on the switch just be sure but I'd think everything will work properly.

I hit the reset button on the POE camera and that fixed it. Thank you everyone for your advice.
