"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

My advice would be go to php.net and learn the language. You can adapt so many good coding practices from learning how it works and what it can do then you write a custom application to do only what you want it to and not someone elses coding which may be way more than you need and slow your webpages down. I have never used commercially a framework. I learned the good way and did my homework although I doubt that is what you want to hear :)  Just trying to encourage you

I honestly don't know what a 'framework' is supposed to do.

I had been worked with PHP frameworks like CodeIgniter , CakePHP and Yii (1.x, 2.x). It helps to develop the system faster with respective their standards, libraries, and docs given. Here is a survey published by sitepoint on the popular frameworks around the community.
