"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

For 500 pages I would manually open the file in Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) and start with the first invoice. Delete all the pages not related to it and save it. Repeat.
There are also tools such as http://www.a-pdf.com/content-splitter/ or http://www.evermap.com/autosplit.asp which will allow you to automate the process. There is discussion at http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/293526-splitting-large-pdf-files-using-multiple-page-ranges.

There are also methods described such as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16358002/split-pdf-into-separate-files-based-on-text.

Accepted answer: 0 points for uday ayyagari's comment #a40787074

for the following reason:

it would have been great if it had worked on image pdfs as well

Thanks, but I'm not sure why you would not reward points to me for pointing you in the right direction. Points are not counted against you in any way - you can award as many as you like. By closing the question this way I have no incentive to help. Points are all we get here as volunteers - and only if we earn enough points in a given month or year are we also allowed to ask questions to others. I would request you please reconsider awarding the points to me. Thank you.
