SOA updates, aren't those automatic?

Current environ is server 2008 STD domain with four 2008 domain controllers.  We are adding four 2012 R2 DCs and intend to replace the four 2008 DCs.

My question relates to SOA in DNS.

When I added my four new servers and promoted them, only the first one showed in SOA in DNS for my domain.  Shouldn't the other three pop in there automatically or must I add them manually?

The four original 2008 DCs are there of course, but as I added my new 2012 R2 DCs, I expected them to populate into the SOA DNS entry and only the first one did.

Are those supposed to populate automatically or must I enter them manually?

Let me clarify, I'm looking at the name servers tab under the SOA entry and thinking all of my DCs should populate there and so far, only one has.

Thanks

Cliff

Hi

The first resource record in any Domain Name System (DNS) Zone file should be a Start of Authority (SOA) resource record. The SOA resource record indicates that this DNS name server is the best source of information for the data within this DNS domain.

It will record the first record only, not all three. See https://support.dnsimple.com/articles/soa-record/

Hope that helps

So all DCs added to the Name Server tab after the initial domain spin up are manual entries?  At present, we have the SOA DNS entry and there are five domain controllers in there.  I expected the new domain controllers to populate into the name server tab as they were promoted.

That was really my question.  Do domain controllers show in the name server tab on the SOA DNS entry automatically or are they manually entered?

Got ya

I believe you add them to the Name Servers TAB and then DNS will create all the relavant records for you.

Its been so long since I have had to do the same.

Thanks

ok, that's what I "thought" as well.  I went and looked at a few other domains I manage and there is just the one DC in some and more than one DC in some others.

I'll leave this open a few more mins to see if anyone else chimes in.

Thank you Mark.

I know the question's already closed but - if you have an AD integrated zone, whichever server you query will have itself as the SOA.
