Easiest way is to connect the AP to a switch port on the same vlan as the WLC. The AP will discover the WLC automatically and send join request.

It's also easier to use the WLC as the DHCP server just for the APs but you can use a separate server if desired.

If your dhcp server is on a different vlan, you will need to configure ip-helper address.

Is the AP running lightweight code?

What version of code is on the WLC?

can the ap  be on the same vlan ? i thought  you have to put the ap on a different vlan for it to talk to the wlc. i will attempt and see if that works.
Craig BeckCommented:
The AP can be on the same VLAN as the WLC's management interface, however if you have tens of APs it can cause issues.  With one or two it's never a problem.

i also need to know how do i get the ap to connect to the wlc do i have to login into the access point assign an ip address what are the steps to get the ap to talk to my wlc 2504 ?
Craig BeckCommented:
AP needs an IP, either static or DHCP.  Just use DHCP if the AP is on the same subnet as the WLC.  Once the AP has an IP it will connect to the WLC.
