Powershell checkout script ideas

I'm looking for ideas on how best to setup a script that checks for settings on a windows server. Ideally, a list of registry settings and properties to check for and then provide an output of each setting checked with a "pass/fail" output. I know which settings I'm looking for and how to query them, I'm just looking for a framework of how to best create a report on them.Anyone have some existing examples?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You could always use DSC to "make it so" and then you don't even need to check any more...!

just want to added to the point.
DSC means Desired State Configuration
It used to be used with SCCM 2007 but powershell 4.0 introduce a powershell DSC which is what cantoris mention.

What DSC does is it will check and make sure it revert back to the settings you initial configure.

For example to check an exchange servers, some one wrote a DSC script

The fun part of this is how to secure the password and that can be a bit challenging but you will learn it through.

For registry key
