Using Windows 8.1 PRO media buy its installing 8.1 STANDARD

I have a ASUS X550C laptop which came with Windows 8.1 installed. I presume this was the standard version as it just said Windows 8.1 in the system screen.

I have a Microsoft Partner Action Pack subscription which has internal user rights for Windows 8.1 PRO.

I have downloaded the official ISO from the MS Partner portal and burnt this to a DVD.

First I installed it on my HP laptop which installed fine. It says Windows 8.1 PRO in the system screen and I have added to my domain.

When I use the same DVD to install it onto the ASUS laptop, the install goes fine but what appears to be installed is 8.1 STANDARD as it just says Windows 8.1 in the system screen. The option to add it to a domain is greyed out.

What is going on here? Why is it not installing the PRO version.

In the partner portal it also shows me my internal user rights licence key, but I have not used it as the installs did not ask for it?

you should have been asked for a product key on installation and apparently you didn't

I cant remember if I was asked for a product key when I installed on the HP but I definitely wasn't asked on the ASUS.

When I try to change the key on the system screen it says that it isn't valid for this product.
If a computer comes with Win 8 preinstalled, the product key is embedded in the BIOS, so the installation reads the key from there. So, since your laptop came with Win8 preinstalled, the new installation is stull using that product key, and that's why it's installing the standard version. You have to go into th UEFI BIOS on the laptop, and see if it gives you an option to delete or change the product key for Win8. If it does, then you can enter the new key, and reinstall the OS again.
Acronis True Image 2019 just released!

Create a reliable backup. Make sure you always have dependable copies of your data so you can restore your entire system or individual files.

The license keys are embedded in the BIOS and applied automatically when the matching OS is installed. Your iso probably includes Windows 8.1 core along with Pro and possibly also Ultimate. So the installation automatically activates and installs the Windows 8.1 core version.

You'd have to check whether you can add your key into the BIOS.

Ok I have tried disabling secure boot and deleting the keys in UEFI. This didnt seem to help.

I found this article:

which did the trick.

Basically create a bootable Win 8 USB stick and add your new licence key to that. The install proceeds with the proper key.

The other option once you have installed it is to go to the "anytime upgrade" option in control panel and insert the PRO key and it will "upgrade" it to PRO--quick and easy.
