SBS 2008 Migration To Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi Guys

Our thoughts are this:
1)      Install AD Services & DNS.
a.      Join existing domain and promote to DC, no role migration at this point.
b.      Forest prep the SBS 2008 to new schema
c.      Install and Configure DNS as secondary
2)      Install print services, configure & deploy via GPO. Remove old print services form SBS
3)      Use DFS to replicate user files between SBS and Win2012, switch users to use this as the filestore.
4)      Uninstall Exchange
5)      Move AD roles (must complete within 21 days).

1)      Is the above a reasonable plan?
2)      What about user profile data?
3)      Are the old GPOs used by SBS 2008 still useable?
4)      The use of the migration tool doesn’t seem to be supported on SBS 2008.

Any thoughts most welcome.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

user profiles are local to each machine unless you are using redirected folders
The older gpo's should still work.

A few things:

You have to prep the forest and domain schemas before you raise a newer version DC. So steps 1a and 1b are technically out of order. But in 2012, the wizard will upgrade the schema if necessary, so in practice, 1b is simply unnecessary.

Step 3. Unless you already have DFS deployed and configured, use Robocopy.  DFS-R can be very difficult to get right and troubleshoot when things go wrong. Deploying it during another complex project like a migration is inviting trouble.
