System state backup with BE 15 failed, why?
This is using Symantec Backup Exec 15 on MS Windows 2008 R2 server w/sp1. I setup scheduled job to backup data, all can pass without problem. However, my user has a request to backup the system state. Now, I tried to run the backup, all the backups failed with the following errors:
Backup
V-79-57344-34108 - An unexpected error occurred when cleaning up snapshot volumes. Confirmed that all snapped volumes are correctly resynchronized with original volumes
Backup- \\servera\system?state

the snapshot warning. file c:\windows\system32\tasks\ * /s is not present on the snapshot
the snapshot warning. file c:\windows\tasks\* /s is not present on the snapshot
warning: "\\servera\system?state\ta sk scheduler\tasksstore" is a corrupt file. This file cannot be verify.
vss snapshot warning. file c:\windows\vss\writer\*.xm l is not present on the snapshot
vss snapshot warning. file c:\windows\system32\wbem\r epositary\ *.* /s is not present on the snapshot
As for this scheduled backup job, I put VSS Snaphot - using Microsoft VSS.
Appreciate your help

Check settings for shadow copies on your disks.
ASKER
All shadow copies disabled.
Do you have enough free space?
ASKER
Both c and d drives got plenty of free spaces.
All shadow copies disabled. Is "Max size" "No limit"?
ASKER
All 2 \\?\Volume{, and C:\ and D:\ are DISABLED in "Next run time".
Highlight C:\, and select "settings" shows Maximum size: use limit 320 mb. Used 320 mb and maximum 320 mb.
It shows 3 shares.

Also found that the volume shadow copy service is started all the time.
I check mine. It has Manual Startup Type.

Hi Karelin,
Yes, the service is in Manual startup, but, it is "started" all the time.
I've increase the c: drive from 320 mb to 28649 mb.

Run a chkdsk /f on all your disk's partitions to repair the file-systems. This needs a reboot and the chkdsk will be run while booting, if the disk-space is large this can take very long, so make sure you do this "off-hours", when no one is using the server.
When done, try the backup again.

After remove the max on 320 MB, the NTBackup on system state took about 4 hours and completed successfully. After that, system state backup using SBE 15 also completed successfully. Thanks for A Karelin of pointing out the max capped on 320 mb for C: Drive.
Appreciate a lot.
