Secure and nonsecure DNS

Environment is Server 2012 R2.  Our DNS allows both secure and non-secure registration of devices in DNS.

When I asked about that, I was told printers, phones were among some of the devices that would get an IP from DHCP that might need to register in DNS.  I wasn't so sure.  I would think that if DHCP issues an address, that address could register in DNS, but after some reading, I see secure means domain joined.  So, workgroup computers could not register, and that's fine, but printers?  Phones?

I need some clarity on secure vs nonsecure where DNS updates is concerned.  To my memory, I have never set up anything but secure and never had a problem.

Secure DNS refers to Active Directory objects being able to modify their records (i.e. workstation, server, etc.).  Insecure means that non-AD devices can also register and update records.  This is a security hole as exploits could be written to modify DNS entries by non-AD objects.  

It is always good to have Secure DNS and manually create entries for devices that do need DNS entries.  I can never recall ever having to look at someone's phone in DNS.  Things such as this should be addressed by the AD Infrastructure Policy you are putting in.  For starters, policies I have endorsed/created/implemented have included the following:

1.  Secure DNS
2.  Naming standards (xxxSVRyyyy, xxxWKSyyyy, xxxPRTyyyy, xxxNETyyyy where xxx is site ID and yyyy is numerical ID, SVR=servers, WKS=workstations, NET=network enabled devices such as NAS, SAN, Access Point, etc.)
3.  Use Description fields in AD for users and devices (also use Location field for printers)
4.  Maintain an inventory of all printers and network attached devices
5.  Regular housekeeping
