Hyper-V 2012R2 Live Export, Is it safe for DCs and Exchange Servers

Hi,

I wanted to find out what actually occurs when "Hyper-V 2012R2 Live Export" of a virtual machine actually does when it runs it. Does it do a full VSS Backup just like you were doing a 2012R2 Windows Image backup?

I am particularly concerned about Domain Controllers and Exchange Servers. I want to make sure that when re-importing the domain controller elsewhere there isn't some sort of corruption due to a snapshot or something. Thanks!

Also Exchange Servers?

I'm assuming Hyper-V Replication is similar and is safe for DCs and Exchange?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No, it is not safe for those workloads. The live export feature actually takes a checkpoint and exports that. Checkpoints are not safe on DCs nor exchange, as documented by both of those teams.

Hyper-v replica is okay for a DC, although I'd question the wisdom of it. It seems it'd be better just to have a second running DC and save the overhead. Hyper-v replica is *not* supported for exchange.
