How to create a membership/login section in WordPress

Hello. I have a site where I would like to have a section that only logged in users can get to.  I would like to have a log in button that when clicked gives a screen where the user can enter a username and password that either they can register and create on their own or that I can supply.   I used to do this by creating a database table of usernames and passwords that I used .net to check against.  How can I do this in WordPress. I think I need some kind of membership plug in and then some kind of login plug in.  I don't know. I'm a complete newbie to WordPress.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The easiest way to do this is to use two plugins:

Theme My Login: https://wordpress.org/plugins/theme-my-login/

Members: https://wordpress.org/plugins/members/

Members provide you with the ability to secure individual posts or pages or the entire site.  Theme My Login makes your login and registration pages fit your theme.

Hello. I am a complete WordPress newbie so forgive me for asking a dumb question.   I installed both plug ins and played with it yesterday.  However, when I go to a page that I have protected with a certain user role, the correct message comes up saying "Sorry, but you do not have permission to view this content."  But I don't know how to bring up the login screen for the user to be able to log in to view the information. I don't want people to log into my WordPress admin panel.   I want them to log in and go straight to their content.   How do I create login links on the menu bar and how can I take the user straight to a login page when they try to access protected data?

If you installed and activated Theme My Login, then it should have created a Log In page that you can link people to with the rejection message  You can also put the login form in a widget.
