Updating plain ESXi with HP ESXi image ?

I'm having issue to my existing VMware ESXi server that was installed from plain vanilla image (not from HP) with the HP AMS agent.

Can I apply the following ESXi 5.1 Update 2 Patch 5 using the below steps for the ESXi server that is having problem now ?
1.    Download ‘VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-Update2-2000251-HP-5.69.2-Nov2014.iso’ from the below provided link.
2.    Connect to the iLO for the server
3.    Attach the .ISO, boot the server from ISO
4.    Follow the onscreen prompts to update the ESXi host.

How do I ensure the existing ESXi configuration is kept during the upgrade process ?

If not can anyone please let me know what's the step to backup the configuration before the upgrade ?

The upgrade process, will upgrade the existing configuration.

If it cannot upgrade the installation, it will tell you.

If you want to backup the configuration see here

use the vCLI command

vicfg-cfgbackup --server=ESXi_host_IP_address --username=root -s output_file_name

Yes you can upgrade with the HP solution and it will give you your agent. During install it will search for current installations of VMware and ask if you want to upgrade it. Then you can just say yes to that. Make sure it's asking you if you want to upgrade it, don't select clean install.

OK, so no need to worry about losing any configuration in existing ESXi ?

Do I need to backup anything before the upgrade ?

Thanks Andrew,

At the moment I need to reboot the ESXi server due to "can't fork" issue I'm having at the moment. So yes after the reboot I join it to the VCenter and issue the command above to backup the config.

We always recommend backups. It's the nature of IT. But no it will not blow away your config. If the upgrade goes wrong it can roll back.

I would backup the configuration, you can then always apply this to a fresh ESXi installation, if the upgrade fails.

We backup our configs daily!

Thanks Andrew,
So I assume the command that you mention can be scheduled to perform online backup for the ESXi servers.

But why you back it up daily ?
Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
it's a command line command, so you schedule it via what ever OS you use, e.g. Windows scheduler

because configurations changes daily!

addition of vLANs, changes in networking etc
Once you add HP vibsdepot in VUM sources it will instantly offer to install HP agents and drivers on all HP servers.
