Exchange 2010 Full Backup with VSS

Hello, I am trying to do a full backup of my exchange 2010 server using backup assist to clear the log files.  The size of the mailbox folder has escalated to 520Gb and every time I try to do a manual backup using the VSS writer I get an error message back saying insufficient storage space.  The details are:

C drive - 180Gb free of a 800Gb drive
Backup Assist v7.4.6
Backing up to an external HDD E:\ - 1Tb

Can anyone give me some ideas to get a full backup to complete so it will clear the log files?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

How large is the database and how much space is on the external drive?
Personally I would probably just enable circular logging, let Exchange flush the logs that way, Then disable circular logging and do a backup immediately.

Is the external drive formatted in NTFS?

I think I have managed to complete a full backup, how long does it take for exchange to start removing the log files?
Simon Butler (Sembee)ConsultantCommented:
As soon as the backup is complete the logs should start to be removed.
You should find a log entry in the Application log confirming that it is happening.

If you look at the properties of the database you should see the date the backup was completed.

There is a chance that the logs are not flushing correctly for some reason - AV software or something hanging on to the files.

I enabled circular logging and removed the old files.  Now doing a full backup as the one previous did not work correctly.  Thanks for the advice.
