I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are you referring to FileMaker's External SQL Sources feature?  If so, that does not require Server.  You just need Pro for that, and you would need the ODBC driver for whatever database you're using installed on the FM Pro machine so that you can configure a DSN.  Then FM can use that DSN to utilize the data.

can this be done for FileMaker runtime only version
Andrew AngellCo-Owner / DeveloperCommented:
I've never specifically tested that, so I can't say for sure, but even if it works it would probably be a hassle because every user would have to configure a DSN on their own machine.  Non-technical users will have a lot of trouble with this and you'll end up spending loads of time supporting that.

When I've built solutions on FM runtime in the past I've always used PHP web services hosted on my web server.  Then I use the "Insert from URL" script step in FM to communicate with the web services.  The PHP scripts handle all of the communication with the SQL database as well as any communication with other web services (PayPal, eBay, Social Networks, etc.)

So your not running a FM Server ?
Andrew AngellCo-Owner / DeveloperCommented:
Not with runtime solutions, no.  Those are just packaged up and sent to people so they can run it without owning FM Pro or Server.

For people that are working on FM Server with Pro clients then I just go ahead and configure the DSN on the server.  That way all FM Pro clients will have access to the SQL database.
