Slow file access

One of our clients (London based), is having an issue in their New York office with their shared drive. They use a VPN to connect to London and then map a folder on a file server to access shared files.

They find that transferring files to the local machines and navigating around the root of the shared drive works fine, albeit a little slow. However there is a real slowness issue while navigating deeper within that shared drive. This is happening on both Windows and Mac machines.

Is anyone aware of any reason for why navigation within a mapped shared drive would be so slow after going through a couple of folders?

I got a tracert run on a couple of machines over there to check the amount of hops, which only returned two, so this should not be causing any issue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

When you access a folder, it starts enumerating each files access permissions for display.  The ping times delay access, as each file name is loaded into your Finder or Explorer Windows.

I found this technet link after I typed up my first 2 sentences.  There's a lot of back and forth access.
