"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The difference here is that the XIV is a Storage system, whereas the SVC, is a storage virtualisation system.

The XIV presents its storage as LUNs which can be accessed directly, or via the SVC. The SVC puts these (input) LUNs into a pool of available storage and then slices and dices this pool into its own (output) LUNs which can be all of a input LUN, or part of an input LUN, or even a combination of input LUNs

THanks but why can the XIV only present a lun no smaller than 15 or 17GB

Sorry don't know much about the XIV , but Its obviously a design decision based on the way it's RAID engine works - probably due to having a minimum number of spindles restriction
