"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First thing to check: What's the speed supposed to be (according to your subscription)
In the past, has this speed been reliable?

Usually www.speedtest.net does a reliable speed test
If this speed is not attained (to your satisfaction or subscription), you have to test every single step of the way from your computer/pc/mobile/whatever, to the router/modem. After that, it's pretty much out of your control.

Testing speed, use network cable on the modem, with all other devices disconnected. If speeds are now okay, it was either your wifi or it was the other devices. Turn them all on. Test again. If speeds remain good, test again on wifi.

Each step of these test will tell you a bit more about your problem.

It would be ideal if you could check directly through the cable modem, and then almost immediately after, reconnect the router and check on a wired computer again. This will give you a side by side test which is what you want.

One possibility (happened to me) is that the router throughput is not adequate for higher ISP speeds. This will show up if the cable speed is fine and the router speed is not. So then if this is the case a faster router is the solution.
