Best Practice for number of mx records at nameservers

I have only one mx record at my nameserver for my domain. Generated an online report that said that is a single point of failure...Should I be worried.? What can I do to change this?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you have only one mail server, leave it as it is. There's nothing else (logical) to do.

The MX records need to point to a valid inbound mail server. If you only have one server then you'll achieve nothing by adding an additional mx record.

The reason this is listed as a SPOF is because, in the event your mailserver is down, sending mailservers won't be able to connect and will eventually give up. The sender will receive an Non Delivery Report and you'll be none-the-wiser that you were ever sent an email.

There are services out there that you can subscribe to which can act as a man in the middle when receiving emails. You point your mx records at them, and they forward onto your mail server. They will have multiple servers which will resolve the SPOF issue and, in the event your server is down, they will accept and queue up your messages and then deliver them to your server when it comes back online.
