SBS 2011 User with External Email Address

I have SBS 2011.

I have a new employee that needs to use a gmail account and NOT an email account from our Exchange server.

How can I create this user in SBS 2011 AD and set them up with an external GMail email so that they show up in our Distribution Groups but with their external email address?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You need to create a mail contact in Exchange. The user will then appear in the Global Address List.

You can then add the contact to a distribution group.

Chris,

How will that integrate with the User ID in AD?

In other words, won't the user name show up twice? 1 time for the AD User and 1 time for the Mail Contact?

If they don't have a mailbox, their AD account won't appear in the address list, leaving only the external contact.

Yessir!

I realized after I posted my comment, that my comment did not actually make sense. The G.A.L. and the ability to login and access files are not necessarily connected. Someone can have an AD account allowing access and be in the G.A.L. from a Contact instead of an AD User.

So, I followed your advise and got it all set up - works like a charm!

Thanks for your help!
