Forward email from one domain to another exchange 2010

Hi all, we are looking to migrate emails from one domain to another and have set up a new SMTP for the new account with the old address which works. However if the users send email over the local LAN to the old addresses the mails arent forwarded to the new address. I have looked at the forward to setting in delivey options but the new address isnt searchable from the old exhange server. What would be the best way to fix this,

Thanks in advance

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Same forest, different domain? Two distinctly separate domains? two different exchange servers?  Federation in place?

Unless you explain the exact configuration then an exact answer is not possible, we can Guess and maybe give you the right answer but specifics are nice.

Hi two completeley separate domains
Are you saying that you have added additional SMTP accepted domain on server.
And added additional email address on the users and make it as primary address.

Thanks, i think i may have resolved the issue myself. Ive  created a new mail contact with the external email address and forwarded from in the delivery options. Is this the most efficient way?

That would be the normal way if they are separate forests yes
