Windows 7 - dot net errors

User started their computer and it went into the hard drive scan and identified several errors fixing them.  Computer worked fine the day before.  After the lengthly period of scanning the drive, it started and completed from several programs, including boxsync, mom, sage ACT, sage ACT outlook connector about a problem with dotnet 2.0.50727 and said it was required and you needed to download and install the dotnet software.  It appears that those version of dotnet are installed and embedded in the Win7OS.

The system appears to work but not for applications requiring dotnet.  Also, if you try to go into programs and features and select windows features, it complains about some missing items.

How to you get this problem resolved.

Sounds like a lot has been messed up. I suspect maybe a hard drive failure. Do a full scan, in My Computer, right mouse click on the C: drive, tab Tools > Error checking  (it will ask for a reboot). Let us know the results (if there are too many errors, hurry to replace the disk).

They had numerous errors yesterday.  I can get the hard disk replaced but that is only  1/2 the problem.  Once the data is copied over, I need to get the embedded dot next issue resolved.

How do I do that?
backup/image that drive NOW with the caveat that any access to the drive may make the drive fail completely. restore the image to a new drive and do an over install of the operating system.

In the long run starting fresh keeping the user data files may be the best solution.
How do you specifically do an over install with window 7.  I am prepared for the last item regarding data files and program reinstallation.

Specificially what are the procedures to redo the windows 7 install.  I have done it previously with winxp but not with Win7.  I have the Dell Win7sp1 reinstallation CD so if you could direct me to the procedures, that would be appreciated.
what i do in such a case is first make sure the disk is ok (reinstalling on a bad drive is a waste of time)
so - either take a new drive, or run a diag on the old one (i use UBCD for this - if you want info on it just tell me)
if there is more than 1 drive installed, i suggest to disconnect the data drives
then you boot from the INSTALL DVD; if there is more than 1 drive connected, you'll have to select it
from then on - follow the screens

the Dell DVD may behave different

Please note, the Dell DVD may very well DELETE everything on your computer, and install a fresh image (with all the drivers etc). You will lose all your settings etc, and start totally "clean". Is that what you need?
I would like the info on UBCD.

The information on the page for this link:

here a guide for install W7 :  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

states doing a clean install  and "You do NOT want to preserve your data, programs or system drivers"

I want to repair the installation to fix the items like dotnet framework that was broken.  I don't want to do a clean install, but repair the existing.  I see the repair option and the "Upgrade type of isntallation".  I have read about using the "upgrade" method to fix the currently installed option.

What specifically needs to be done.  I have done similar items on WinXP but never with Win7.
you have to boot into the operating system.. run setup from the installation media.. select install and then select upgrade.

When following all the advice here, please be careful when using the Dell DVD, and read every step carefully, and then again and again. All the advice put here is based on a real Microsoft installation media, while the Dell DVD might not be (could be a custom  restore DVD).
Its not a custom restore DVD.  That is what is on the Hard drive itself in the restore partition.  This is a copy of the Windows installation CD based on what I have seen when I looked at it.
a copy of the windows install CD??  Dell does not ship that anymore, afaik
can you post a picture of it?
You request it for a Win7 machine and pay extra for it.  This one is from one of our laptops purchased May 2014.
Can you please download and run .Net repair tool and post back results.

may i ask if you tested the drive, to be sure it is ok?
I don't know if the drive is OK.  Copied data to a new drive after doing a disk check.  Did a repair install (upgrade) as indicated above and in other posts I searched for.  This was using the Dell Win 7 with sp1 installation disk from Dell.  This is just a Dell labelled Win 7 installation disk, not a restore disk.

It worked just fine.  Took between 2 and 3 hours as it did alot of checking.  Then there were problems with Net 4 or Net 4.5 status and it automatically corrected that, taking another 2+ hours or more.  But it appears to be working just fine.  All previous problems are resolved and we are on a new hard disk.

Thanks for all the assistance.
i only run chkdsk after running a diag -
note that chkdsk is a file system diagnostic, NOT a disk diag
