Macbook Pro Airplay to Apple TV

Recently, I have noticed that after upgrading to Yosemite OSX there is significant lag when I use Airplay to my Apple TV.  When I was on Mavericks OSX there was never an issue of lag.  The same thing happened with my wife's macbook pro.  After I upgraded to Yosemite hers still had Mavericks and I did confirm using Airplay did not have lag on her macbook.  However, after she upgraded to Yosemite her macbook experienced the Airplay lag as well.

Here is what I have tried:

I've restarted both the macbook pro and Apple TV and connect to Airplay, but there is no improvement.
I have replaced the HDMI cable that connects from the Apple TV to my TV.
My Apple TV is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet cable. (Always has been.)
I have turned off the wireless on my macbook and connected an ethernet cable from the macbook to the airport extreme. (There was slight improvement but still noticeable lag; it was tolerable I guess.)
The Apple TV, Airport Extreme and Macbook are all up to date with their software.  (pending a result here:
The Apple TV has not had degraded performance at any other time.

The fact that I have 3 Apple devices and am still experiencing this is super annoying.

What are my options?

You may have to wait for apple to come out with improved wireless performance under Yosemite.

You could dual boot with a Mavericks partition, too. Not too hard to setup but kinda annoying depending on what you're projecting up on the screen. If it's just web content then it's easy to do it that way.

deactivate Bluetooth when using airplay. You have to have the bluetooth deactivated before you connect to airplay, and activating it after seems to break the connection.
...This problem with mirroring was corrected with the latest firmware update to the 3rd generation Apple TV but for the 2nd generation there is still no remedy. That's what I've noticed. All this talk of bluetooth activating and deactivating will not solve this problem until you update or until Apple releases an update for the 2nd generation Apple TV.
....  I spent 2 days with the technical support from Apple with the same issue.
After creating a new partition on my mac to get the original data extract from computer, it has been sent to the engineering and the answer came today:
We are facing a compatibility issue between ATV and yosemite, we are currently working on an update (we don't have any resolution date and we don't know if the update will come from ATV update or Yosemite update).
NB: my problem wasn't solved with the bluetooth.
So only thing we can do is wait and see

I can backup what davidanders says.  I've an AppleTV v3 and AirPlay was crippled with Yosemite until 10.10.3 update which seems to have resolved it for me.
It is working OK again now but it was pretty much useless for 3 months.
Just in case you're unsure .. this article explains how to indetify which model of AppleTV you have

Yosemite 10.10.4 was released.  I updated my macbook, ran airplay (turns out its 1st/2nd generation), and there is no more lag.

- Bluetooth was never on because I never had a use for it.
- I did not try dual booting to Mavericks.  I was just hoping Apple would fix their *bleep*.

Thank you for your patience and help with this!
