MS DOS 6.22 cannot install mouse driver?

I just installed MS-DOS 6.22.

I got a diskette with the mouse driver files on it but when I try to install it using the command A:\

A:\> dir

A:\> install

I get to the directory map and the default name is "CDROM" so I installed it either way.

Now I got the CD-drive installed but the not the mouse driver but the diskette containts mouse driver files??

When I choose "msmouse" instead of "install" I get the message "This program cannot be run in DOS mode.

Can somebody help me out?

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the mouse is supported in DOS?

On the diskette, is there a SETUP.EXE program for the mouse?  Try running Setup.

Most DOS systems did not use mice.
AgrippaSenior IT ConsultantAuthor Commented:
Yes ''MSmouse'' is the Exe program. ( msmouse.exe ) . After running te exe program it says ''This program cannot be run in DOS mode''.

Thanks in advance!
That is probably the mouse driver for windows. Look for a file.

Do you really need to load the mouse under DOS?

As a side note, there is no USB support under either DOS or Windows 3.x so only a hardware / "mouse port" mouse can be used.
JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I assumed a mouse port when I answered. If you do not have a mouse port, consider running DOS as a virtual machine. I have that running and the mouse works in the VM. Autoexec.bat calls c:\DOS\ which is the driver and mouse.ini says it is a PS2 Mouse.

To get the mouse to work you actually have to add commands to both the config.sys and the autoexec.bat file; it has been a long time since I used DOS but I believe this link is accurate and gives you the right commands but I have not tested it

You only need the LH command if you are trying to load MOUSE in high memory. I have the PS2 mouse working in my Virtual DOS machine with just the AUTOEXEC command (no CONFIG device).

@ElisysAutomatisering  - you should have MOUSE.COM already in your DOS folder. Please check.

@ElisysAutomatisering  - Did you try MOUSE.COM that already comes with DOS?  And how did it work for you?

Summary of points made.

The msmouse.exe is probably for Windows as John Hurst notes and won't work.  We need brand/model of mouse to recommend better files.  And what type of plug is on the end of the mouse?

CuteMouse will work with most mice.  Little complicated to use but it will work.  That might be another solution but we need brand/model of mouse.

There are USB drivers for DOS but you don't go there unless you have a terrible need for USB devices.
