"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I assumed your entire string was = 'ABCD-181888  BCDE-234'. If ever you may have numerics interspersed in your string, you'll need a user defined function:

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.udf_GetNumeric (
    @strAlphaNumeric    varchar(255)
)
RETURNS varchar(255)
AS
BEGIN
    DECLARE @intAlpha INT
    SET @intAlpha = PATINDEX('%[^0-9]%', @strAlphaNumeric)
    WHILE @intAlpha > 0
    BEGIN
        SET @strAlphaNumeric = STUFF(@strAlphaNumeric, @intAlpha, 1, '' )
        SET @intAlpha = PATINDEX('%[^0-9]%', @strAlphaNumeric )
    END
    RETURN ISNULL(@strAlphaNumeric, 0)
END

Open in new window

Then you can execute it similar to the following:

DECLARE @TestString varchar(255)
SET @TestString = 'ABCD-181888  BCDE-234'
SELECT  @TestString     AS TestString,
        dbo.udf_GetNumeric(@TestString) AS Converted
