Sound Editing

What is the best software for non-professional editing of sound files?  I'm running Windows 7.

Thanks,

Phil

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Best is a very subjective term.

Many PCs include a basic audio/video suite that can be used or expanded.   Nero and Roxio are popular and include good video/audio editors.

If you would be more specific on the type of editing you are considering, more specific recommendations are available.

I found Wavepad from NCH software to be the best myself.  I use to use it to edit over-the-air broadcasts that I would record to MP3:

Audacity (suggested above) is probably the best free choice.

Adobe Audition is an amazing editor ... I use an older version (1.5) that I got as an upgrade from Cool Edit Pro a decade or so ago.    The newest version is even better ... but it's a subscription product that cost $20/month.     Well worth that if you're doing a lot of editing ... but for casual use (i.e. "non-professional")  I'd go with Audacity.
