I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

your first suggestion, not sure if its applicable as its sda3 thats full:

 df -h
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3       9.8G  9.8G     0 100% /
udev            4.0G  104K  4.0G   1% /dev
tmpfs           4.0G     0  4.0G   0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1       128M   21M  101M  18% /boot
/dev/sdb1        20G  173M   19G   1% /storage/core
/dev/sdb2        20G  2.1G   17G  11% /storage/log
/dev/sdb3        60G  1.1G   56G   2% /storage/db
on your second option i get the following:

sudo -u postgres /opt/vmware/vpostgres/1.0/bin/vacuumdb -a -e -v -f -U postgres > /tmp/vacuumdb.log
could not change directory to "/root"
vacuumdb: could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

third option ,the database isnt crashing...
