LTO Tapes -- upgrade hardware ?

I have an old Dell PowerVault 124T LTO-4 tape drive.

Can I somehow upgrade the firmware/etc so it will
work with LTO-5/etc without having to purchase
new hardware ?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The drive hardware is different so far as I know. We purchased new drives for the new tapes.

John is correct. LTO standards include hardware for the drives. These are normally RW backwards compatible for the previous generation and R compatible for the generation before that.
