restricted folder permissions not being applied until they were removed then re-applied

Hi all :)

I have a strange problem and I am hoping someone might have an answer.

The problem is now resolved BUT I am concerned that it occurred in the first place.

On one of our server 2012 file servers there is a folder (with sub folders) that had restricted (special) permissions for the users so that they could create files but not delete them.

This has been applied since forever but today it was reported to me that users were able to delete files they had created (but not files created by others)

I checked and the special permissions were still enabled so I removed them, hit apply then reapplied them and it fixed the issue.

What on earth could have caused that to happen as it is rather concerning!

I'm guessing that you didn't actually record what the changed settings were and what they should be.  Did you disable inheritance at the top folder of this set of folders?

yes inheritance was/is disabled

It seems someone modified the root/sub folder permission and hence issue occurred. For future to track this issue you can enable auditing on files and folders on server. See my comments in this article:
