There's a difference between the Gmail app and the Mail app.<br />
The Gmail app is ALWAYS the white icon with the red M, it's push, and not IMAP.<br />
The Mail app, depends on the phone (Samsung/HTC/etc etc have their slightly different own Mail app), you have to set up your gmail for it, while the Gmail app needs no setup (it just works immediately with your google login). The Mail icon looks different on different phones.<br />
So check again on the phone, and use Gmail instead of Mail.
