Chrome browser & Chrome processse

I have noticed that when I open my Chrome browser & check processes under Task Manager, there are a lot of processes running. I don't see this with Firefox & IE.

Anyone know why so many processes are opening up?
Is it possible to control how many processes Chrome cranks up when it starts?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's normal-- Chrome uses this method to load separate parts of the web page into separate processes; that way if one part of a page crashes it won't tank the whole site.

Chrome also has it's own built task manager you can view pressing Shift+Esc  to kill individual browser processes.

Other browsers do the same. Could it be that you told chrome to restore the last session (=tabs) while you did not do this with the other browsers?

I just discovered an advance setting in Chrome to "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". I unchecked this & now it doesn't appear to be loading the Chrome processes like it was.
