SQL Server 2012 Backup taking a very long time and killing performance

We are running SQL Server 2012 with the latest updates installed.  We have an 80GB database that we are backing up.  Using compression, the resulting database is about 20GB.  This backup is taking almost 4 hours to run, which seems way too long for that amount of data.

Also, during the time the backup is running, the server is very unresponsive.  We can not even connect to the server with Remote Desktop as it times out after several minutes.

Any suggestions for why a backup could be running so slowly?

Could be a number of things.  Here's a few to check for, roughly in order of likelihood, although that can vary:

I/O issues / stall on the backup drive
contention between database usage and backup process
large number of VLFs in the log file

These options might also be able to improve backup speed:
specifying multiple <backup_device>s

Are you executing the backup during the working hours? A full backup should be scheduled to a non working period.
Are you creating backup file on data volume ?
Or on network share ?
